How Our Home Renovation Turned Into the Start of Flexitow
We’re Patrick and Tiffany, the husband-and-wife team behind Flexitow Skip Bins here in Mackay.
Funny thing is, we never planned to start a skip bin business — it all began with a simple home renovation that nearly drove us crazy.
Patrick’s a builder, and a few years back he was working on an old Queenslander that was getting a new kitchen. The owners wanted to open up the space and modernise it — the kind of project he’d done plenty of times before. But there was one big problem: the skip bin.
The skip that couldn’t skip
The driveway was narrow, the house was up high, and there was no room on the street without blocking traffic. The skip had to sit way out front near the kerb, while all the demolition was happening at the back of the house.
Patrick spent days hauling old cupboards, tiles, and timber up and down the driveway — in the heat, dodging dogs, hoses, and garden ornaments. By the end of the first week, he said, “There’s got to be a better way to do this.”
That’s when the idea for Flexitow was born.
From frustration to innovation
We started talking about what would make life easier for builders and homeowners during renovations.
Patrick said, “If I could just move the bin closer to the work area — even a few metres — it would save hours of walking.”
So we designed a skip bin that could do exactly that: a compact, lockable bin on wheels that can be towed and positioned safely right where it’s needed — in driveways, carports, even under high-set homes.
No more walking waste down the street, no more blocked footpaths, and no more permits for bins sitting on council land. Just flexibility — hence the name Flexitow.
Why we started Flexitow
To have the freedom to work around our family. We spent a few years renovating houses, and later both of us drove Trains for long hours on split shifts. This made it hard to get quality time with our son. So, when the opportunity came up to build something that worked for us — not the other way around — we took it!
Built by locals, for locals
We’re Mackay locals through and through, and we wanted our business to reflect that. Our bins are strong, easy to maneuver, and perfect for home renovations, weekend clean-ups, or small building jobs.
We still remember that first job that started it all — the sweat, the frustration, and finally, that light-bulb moment that changed everything. What began as one builder’s headache is now a local service helping others make their projects cleaner, easier, and more efficient.
Looking back (and ahead)
These days, when we drop off a bin and see it tucked neatly right beside someone’s renovation site, we can’t help but smile. Because that’s exactly how Flexitow started — with one skip that couldn’t get close enough, and one idea that could.
